A medical marijuana grower in Michigan is facing manslaughter charges after police say he chased and fatally shot one of the two men who tried to rob him. Authorities also say he was growing more cannabis than is allowed under Michigan’s medical marijuana law, resulting in another charge.
AnnArbor.com reports 50-year-old Robert Goupill of Milan, about 35 miles southwest of Detroit, was arraigned Monday in Monroe County. He’s charged in Thursday’s shooting death of 28-year-old Jerald Ogden of Ypsilanti.
Goupill is due back in court March 19. A message seeking comment was left today with lawyer Edward Swinkey.
A medical examiner said Ogden died of a shotgun wound to the back. Police say the shooting happened about 200 yards from Goupill’s home.
It’s hard to claim self-defense when you shoot someone in the back 200 yards from the alleged robbery. Of course this guy was hesitant to just call the cops because he was growing too much marijuana, and for that fault goes to him and to the drug policies that have prohibited a plant.
